Me and my Son went there at 3.45 pm this afternoon and ordered food before it closed, well the food was absolutely beautiful, nothing was too much for the staff , the portion size was perfect , the food was cooked perfectly and I had to tip them because I haven't eaten food that good in pub for ages.Well done to all .I need to try more of the menu, so it looks like I will have to go back ☺️☺️☺️

My dad and I often come here for a meal. The food is just fabulous, its always nice and hot, well presented and extremely tasty. An added bonus is that the prices are very reasonable. Service is always prompt and the ladies are very helpful.I would highly recommend this place.

Cambridgeshire Star! We have been staying in the pub hotel and eating in their excellent restaurant for four years now and it seemed like time to write a review. We are so pleased we found this warm and friendly pub: we needed somewhere we could relax and eat well as we dealt with a range of family matters in the local area.(Dog friendly too - in the bar!) The food is exceptionally good and offers a wide range of options - and the menu changes seasonally. There are well cooked and appetising pub staples such as scrumptious fish and chips & sausage and mash - all at reasonable prices. But we especially enjoy the 'specials' and any main meal containing belly pork is sure to be a winner. There are always a couple of interesting vegetarian options which even tempt carnivores like us. Fish dishes are fresh and appetising too. We once had a supper made up of all their starters - like tapas - as these are always innovative and tasty. There is a really good chef here. I think the locals know this but maybe others from further afield need to learn about The Old Red Lion too - especially as you can stay there comfortably over night - warm ensuite rooms available. Staff are friendly and attentive, food arrives promptly and the whole experience is really great.

The staff at this pub with accommodation were possibly the most friendly that I've ever come across. The menu was very good and the food tasty and possibly the hottest thus freshest I've ever had. The restaurant had this working method which I usually don't like which is that no one person is responsible for you but in this case it worked seamlessly. The room was large, clean and well appointed although I have concerns about soundproofing due to the construction method but when I was there the occupation was low so I had no issues with that, just take earplugs just in case as I always do. Good shower, good continental breakfast in a bag. If there was one thing that I would change-and this isn't a deal breaker as the mattress was comfortable- is upgrade the mattress. We visited this well appointed pub purely for a lunch with relations who live in this area. Trying to find a pub/restaurant open on a Tuesday is difficult but we were not disappointed! The location is just off the main road and during our visit it was relatively quiet so service was excellent and unobtrusive. Woodforde's Wherry was on draught in great condition and food did not disappoint being well presented and moderately priced. All in all a perfect visit for us.

Fantastic stay! We travelled up from Cornwall to stay at the Old Red Lion for a family wedding. We stayed 3 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Unfortunately, I have been unwell so couldn’t attend dinner with the family on the first night, but staff kindly brought my dinner to the room so my husband could stay at the table. I was so appreciative of this, thank you 🙂 Our room was clean and spacious. Yes, there were spiders in the bathroom, like others have complained about, but as we also live out in the country, this didn’t bother us at all. It was like home from home for us. We just put them outside, only to find them back in again by morning, so I understand how difficult it is for staff to keep the spiders under control! We felt extremely welcomed and the staff could not do enough for us. Our room was stocked regularly with water, tea, toilet roll etc. We only had to ask if we needed anything. Breakfast was fantastic, in fact, all the food we had whilst staying there was fabulous. The only constructive criticism would be that our room needed a net curtain for privacy, so we could keep the curtains open for light. This would also stop people looking in to our room on the way past as the window was very big and you can see everything. We would definitely stay again. Thank you to everyone at The Old Red Lion 🙂

The room itself was very basic, it felt like a portable cabin rather than room. Mid week a hot breakfast is not offered so we went to McDonald's instead. I needed a one night stay near Haverhill for business. I found The Old Red Lion and its been a joy!I had a huge room, comfortable bed, super clean bathroom, great rainfall shower and the food!!!Tuesday after the Summer Bank Holiday, this was a pleasant surprise.Dinner Bed & Breakfast, £120.

My wife and myself have just had a Sunday lunch here and it was amazing, plentiful and very filling, we both went for the chicken roast and couldn't fault it in anyway, staff were very good too,can't recommend this place enough, definitely return again at some point

We had a nice stay at the Old Red Lion Inn. The rooms were well decorated, clean, and comfortable. We had dinner in the pub, lovely setting. The food portions were very generous but the veggie options and dessert were very bland and the continental breakfast was okay - so 4 stars not 5. The meat on the other tables did look good however! Thank you for our stay.

Just stopped in for a cold drink on a hot day. Good selection of beers on tap, and a few ciders in bottles. The staff and locals in the bar were fantastic!

Pleasant but basic Friendly staff. Room very spacious. No fridge considering there is so much space and could fit one in easily. So many spiders in the bathroom. Had a ground floor room, no blinds so couldn’t have the curtains open as all that were drinking in the pub could see in, and also everyone walks past. Very poor lighting. Asked for a fan and didn’t have any considering it was 30degrees. Basic room with a few little things wrong. Wonky tv, knobs missing on furniture, cobwebs/spiders in bathroom and toilet roll used from previous users. Breakfast states included on website but that is only continental, you pay extra £10 each for cooked.

Very disappointed with accommodation room lighting not well thought out. Stage spot was broken so swung back when directed to work surface. Oversized bulbs in fittings gave extra light but not enough to read. No curtains above door allowed light to pour in when not required in early morning. |On the positive room was comfortable and spacious. Walking group well looked after Our walking group of 16 were very well looked after by the team on Monday. We pre-ordered by 10.00 before our walk to West Wickham and our food was served quickly and efficiently on our return 2 hours later. Thank you to the staff for making our final walk of the term an enjoyable experience.

An enjoyable stay The Old Red Lion Inn was great for my two night visit to the area. I arrived in Cambridge by train and chose to stay at the Old Red Lion as it was on a good bus route to Haverhill. The staff were all friendly and welcoming which makes a difference and important to me anywhere I stay. My room was fine and the continental breakfast bag delivered to my room was just what I needed. The evening meals I had in the pub both evenings were delicious. The best bit of my stay. I would stay at the Old Red Lion again when next in the area. Best roast beef sandwich in Britain Ok I was very hungry, having walked up to this pretty village from Bartlow. The menu offered a series of what they called “Doorstep Sandwiches”. I ordered the roast beef, horse radish and rocket on white. Doorstep it was indeed. But the generosity was all in the filling. Tender, beautifully cooked beef in soft, tasty fresh bread, with plenty of salad to make it feel virtuous. The service was excellent - friendly and welcoming. Beautiful views from the bar window. They do rooms too. I found myself regretting I couldn’t stay longer.

Great pub, cold beer, delicious food, nice spacious and very clean rooms, ample car park, still found a space during Sunday lunch service, not much more one could ask.Stayed 4 nights here, and it's been a great experience. Very clean room, recently, in my opinion, refurbished room, very comfy bed, great wifi throughout, smart TV with all your streaming app pre installed so just sign in and keep watching your fav series.Pub is great as well, very clean, the smell of the wood fires, and the very good music choice just makes it that bit extra cosy.The food was fantastic, all freshly made and delicious.Staff was very helpful, smiling all the time, and made sure everyone had a great time.A couple of things to consider: they only serve continental breakfast during weekdays, would love to have the option of a cooked one, judging by the quality of the food I had it would definitely be banging! On the flip side, I understand we are in a small village, and perhaps it wouldn't make financial sense to the business to pay chefs and staff for maybe 2 guests.Also, if you check in on a Sunday, they stop serving food at 4 p.m., and the pub shuts at or around 7 pm.With everything considered...it's a 4.95 stars from me. Very quiet area, so sleep was great, great food, cold beers! Will definitely return if I'm in the area!Thank you for a great stay!

Try the sausages I often stay here for work as the rooms are lovely, as are the real ales and food. Great friendly service. Good selection of food and they currently have an offer on sausage mash and gravy with different options of each. After a long day travelling as a comfort option this fits the bill and a very good price as well.

Went for a meal last night which for the most part was lovely. However my friend had the beef burger in pretzel bun which was absolutely rock hard /impossible to cut or eat it . She did complain yet nothing was taken off the bill for that item.

We have been here many times before. This time as always the food was excellent and the service as normal was very efficient and more importantly in our opinion very friendly and welcoming. Would highly recommend for Sunday lunch in particular

We were a party of 6, Saturday evening, & as soon as we walked in we were greeted warmly. The Service was very good & the food was most enjoyable & excellent.

We stayed overnight in the car park, in our campervan. The food was excellent and log burner kept us warm when we came in January. Staff were polite and attentive. Would definitely visit again.

I've stayed in the accommodation at this site a few times for weeks at a time. The pub/inn itself is quite pleasant, and the staff are super friendly. The seating areas are clean and tidy, and it all feels quite homely, with a wood-burning stove glowing away (at least while I was there). I ate a few meals here, too and on all occasions, it was wonderful.The accommodation is pretty average; it certainly is not to my taste (or anyone I know, for that matter). The furniture/decor is what I would describe as tacky and low-quality (trying to be something it isn't). The rooms could do with a lick of paint and some more neutral decor; I would say the bathrooms look/feel dated, too. One of the rooms I stayed in had an electric shower, and the water pressure was very poor. Another room I stayed in (photos attached) had a borderline useless over-bath shower, which wasn't practical and meant I either had to settle for a flooded floor or a shower curtain sticking to me. The shower head wasn't high enough (I'm only 176cm tall!) and fell from the bracket a few times, making for a bad place to wash! Unfortunately, the rooms let the place down, as it could be much nicer if the decor weren't so distasteful and run down. Sadly, I have to say I won't be coming back and have booked a similar pub/inn nearby for my next trip to the area.

Not a huge menu but what we had was very nice. Good fish choices.It would have been nice to have been asked if we wanted another drink, rather than having to get up to the bar, but that's just being picky, we were asked several times if the food was ok. So quite attentive but then left alone.

Sunday roast is really good. Services is great and the food is just on point.

Comfortable rooms at an affordable rate. But to be honest, we came for the Sunday Roast. Other reviewers have got it right, this is the best Sunday Roast. The roast beef is tender, succulent and perfectly cooked. The sides were delicious as well and the perfect accompaniment to the beef. The Old Red Lion is one of those places we’ll probably go out of our way to visit again, on a Sunday of course.

Great value & friendly staff second visit to friendly, comfortable pub. Traveling on my own, I booked a twin room but on arrival I was offered a free upgrade to a king room. Very comfortable & although situated near the outside drinking area, being October there were not any late night drinkers. I was offered a table in either the bar or restaurant for my evening meal. The menu covers all options & the specials were also appealing. Excellent food & service from friendly staff. Sunday breakfast was from 9am however I wanted to be off by 8.45am. Nice Sunday lunch Six of us had Sunday lunch here, but the earliest slot available was 3pm! The car park was full when we arrived, so one car had to park elsewhere. We had three roast beef, one pork and two kid's fish and chips (£10 each). The beef was excellent, very tender and tasty. The pork was very good too. They were big platefuls, so unfortunately we didn't have room for dessert. We'd happily eat here again if we're in the area.

Bathroom was very basic with no toiletries other than watery hand wash. No shelves in room for clothes. Lighting very poor so impossible to read. Continental breakfast consisted of an airline type bag delivered to your room the previous evening and containing a croissant, orange juice, cereal bar and apple. Very poor.
